Is IEC standard the same as EN standard?

In the field of technical standards, various organizations play a crucial role in establishing and maintaining specifications that ensure products' safety, efficiency, and performance. Two such organizations are IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and EN (European Norm). Although they both contribute to the development of global standards, there are some differences between IEC and EN standards. This article aims to shed light on these disparities.

Understanding IEC Standards

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a global organization that sets international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. These standards cover a wide range of industries, including energy production, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. IEC standards are intended to promote compatibility, safety, and interoperability among devices manufactured and used across different countries.

The Role of EN Standards

EN standards, on the other hand, are developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). These standards specifically target the European market and aim to harmonize regulations across EU member states. EN standards often adopt or reference relevant IEC standards but may also include additional requirements necessary for the European market.

UL 60335: Understanding the Safety Standard

UL 60335 is a safety standard that applies to household and similar electrical appliances. It is not an IEC or EN standard but rather a product safety certification provided by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a widely recognized third-party testing and certification organization based in the United States. However, UL 60335 incorporates many aspects of both IEC and EN standards, ensuring that certified products meet the essential safety requirements for the North American and European markets.
