What is the difference between IP and IPX rating ?

Ingress Protection (IP) and IPX rating are both used to determine the level of protection that electronic devices provide against solids and liquids. However, there are key differences between the two ratings.

IP rating is a measure of the device's resistance to solid objects, such as dust, dirt, and water. It is usually represented by a number that consists of a first digit for the degree of protection provided and a second digit for the protection against other solid objects. For example, an IP rating of 0 to 6 indicates that the device is completely protected from solid objects.

On the other hand, IPX rating is a measure of the device's resistance to liquid contact. It is also represented by a number, but it is divided into two parts. The first part is the same as IP rating, while the second part is a measure of the device's resistance to contact with water or other liquid substances. For example, an IPX rating of 0 to 8 indicates that the device is completely protected from contact with water or other liquids.

It is important to note that IP and IPX ratings are not the same. While both ratings provide information about the device's protection levels, they are used for different purposes. IP rating is typically used to determine the device's resistance to solid objects, while IPX rating is used to determine the device's resistance to liquid contact.

When choosing an electronic device, it is essential to understand the IP and IPX ratings provided in the device's specifications. While both ratings are important for determining the device's suitability and durability, they serve different purposes and have distinct differences. Therefore, it is crucial to choose the right rating for the right device to ensure the device's protection from potential damage.
